Plume's Bermuda Breakthrough: Regulated On-Chain Vaults Usher in New Era for Institutional DeFi
In a landmark development for the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector and its ongoing convergence with traditional finance (TradFi), Plume, the open finance platform for institutional assets, announced that its Bermuda-based subsidiary, Kimber Digital Assets Bermuda ISAC Ltd. (KDAB), has been granted a Class M Digital Asset Business Licence by the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA). This crucial regulatory approval, secured under the Digital Asset Business Act 2018, positions KDAB as the world's first regulated on-chain vault manager, a significant step forward in de-risking real-world asset (RWA) tokenization for institutional investors.
Bridging the Regulatory Chasm with On-Chain Transparency

The acquisition of this license is a pivotal moment, addressing one of the primary hurdles to institutional adoption in DeFi: regulatory uncertainty. For years, traditional financial institutions have been hesitant to fully engage with the nascent DeFi space due to a lack of clear oversight and standardized compliance frameworks. Plume's innovative approach, combining the inherent transparency and accessibility of decentralized finance with the robust prudential oversight of a globally respected financial regulator like the BMA, offers a compelling solution.
The BMA’s Digital Asset Business Act (DABA) framework is highly regarded, attracting other prominent digital asset firms such as Circle, Coinbase, and Kraken. By operating under such a stringent regulatory regime, KDAB aims to provide institutional investors with the confidence needed to deploy capital into tokenized real-world assets. This includes compliant access to a diverse range of tokenized products, from private credit to treasuries, previously difficult to access within a decentralized and regulated environment.
Jay Pollak, Head of Strategy and Business Development at the VerifiedX Foundation, noted the strong demand for Bitcoin within DeFi, with institutions increasingly seeking self-custody solutions that can satisfy regulatory compliance and privacy needs. Plume's development aligns with this trend, offering a structured and regulated pathway for institutions to participate in on-chain finance. The initiative is designed to remove friction points, making it simpler and more secure for businesses and institutional clients to leverage DeFi's advantages.
The Evolution of Asset Management: Regulated On-Chain Vaults
The regulated on-chain vaults developed by KDAB are set to evolve the traditional Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) model for digital assets. In this new paradigm, users can deposit assets into these vaults, receiving proportional shares in return. These shares then enable them to earn yield and redeem their assets at Net Asset Value (NAV), mirroring familiar structures from traditional finance but with the added benefits of blockchain technology. Crucially, the entire operation is powered by immutable smart contracts, replacing the need for conventional administrators or custodians.
Within this framework, a dedicated curator manages and rebalances assets strictly according to fixed, hardcoded rules. This design ensures that investment judgment is preserved while eliminating the ability to override structural protections or contract logic, a significant enhancement for security and trust. The underlying technology also incorporates robust cybersecurity measures, including rigorous smart contract audits, real-time threat detection, and continuous monitoring for smart contract exploits. The immutability of these smart contracts at the asset control layer is a critical feature, designed to mitigate vulnerabilities that have plagued many DeFi security incidents in the past.
Plume's existing flagship asset management protocol, Nest, already facilitates access to institutional assets from leading firms such as Apollo, WisdomTree, and Hamilton Lane for global investors through compliant, non-custodial vaults. The new regulated vaults under KDAB further solidify Plume's position as a leader in bringing institutional capital into open, programmable, and globally accessible markets, building on a foundation that has already secured over $350 million in distributed asset value.
This development signifies a maturing DeFi landscape where regulatory compliance is no longer an afterthought but a core component of innovation. By providing a regulated and secure conduit for institutional assets to interact with blockchain technology, Plume is not only driving the adoption of tokenized RWAs but also setting a new standard for how traditional and decentralized financial systems can seamlessly integrate for broader economic benefit.
